Tulip Toes on their way...

I just completed my first tulip toes sock, and I better hurry because it sure is getting cold here, and my boss, Becky, is expecting soon. The pattern is from knitty.com, found here: Tulip Toes.

I really like the yarn I'm using- Sirdar Snuggly Baby Bamboo. It's soft and holds it's form well.

So far I like the pattern. I think that it could have been easier to knit with less ends to tie in. I'm knitting the premie size and the bootie part turned out a little small. I did the top in seed stitch instead of ribbing and used 2 stitches for the i-cord, but I think I should have made it longer than the 11 inches that the pattern calls for. I'm not sure if I like how pointy the toe is either. I may make some alterations for the next one, and then reknit the first one.

Family of Knitters- Sort Of

So I came home one day to find this:

I can only assume that Manny was the culprit, although I have no real proof...After 2 hours I gave up on recovering this yarn and tossed it to the yarn gods.

Raja keeping Brian company while knitting his latest project, the checkerboard hat. Raja isn't really dead, he just looks that way. If you'll notice Manny's handywork in the righthand corner (the couch cushion), still trying to fix that...

Heart Scarf Remix Done!

It is finished!

To recap:
The pattern is from the knitty.com breast cancer awareness issue found here : Knitty Special Issue

I used a really cool wool/acrylic blend from Austermann called Muranno. It's a self striping yarn that has 150g per skein. Even with added fringe I had at least a quarter of the skein left.

R.I.P. Ginger

I really wanted to keep this blog strictly about knitting related things, but I'm realizing that my knitting is greatly affected by my life and that certain things in my life are worth mentioning here.

Last night my cat, Ginger, was hit by a car and died soon after. She was found by my neighbor and moments after I sat beside her and stroked her head she passed away. She was the sweetest kitty I have ever had. She made me feel more loved than most people do. She was always there waiting for me when I got home from work, right beside me when I woke up each morning, and was always ready to jump in my lap when I was knitting or attacking my yarn when I was balling it. Some people don't believe in having such a strong relationship with an animal, but I wouldn't have wanted it any other way. All I can say is that I'm glad I was there when she was scared and hurt. I'm just thankful that she wasn't alone.

I miss you ginger!

Fall is Coming!

I love fall!! And the first sign of it showed up on my doorstep yesterday!

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

I love the way fall air feels so crisp and cold, but the sun still leaves me feeling warm. I even got to wear my heart scarf for the first time since I made it 2 months ago...

Sewn Felt Needle Case

I made this needle case today and it was so easy! I was looking for one at my local yarn shop and the only one they had under $30 was a clear plastic case (which would be fine, but I wanted one with a little more personality). I made this small one to hold some of my needles and plan on making more for my circulars, giant needles, dpns and other supplies. I bought 6 pieces of felt from walmart for $0.18 each and only used 3 1/2 of them. I used fabric paint for the numbers. I'm sure I could make a larger, better one, but for testing out an idea I think this one turned out pretty well.

Pumpkin Hat

So I wanted to knit my dad this really cool pumpkin hat for his birthday since is it towards the beginning of fall, but it just didn’t work out in time. I picked Rowan Summer Tweed in a burnt orange shade because tweed looks awesome and it was the only shade of orange that I could find that wasn’t neon. But man is it a pain to work with. I’m considering this project done because I did finish it, it just stretched out really bad after I finished. I don’t blame the pattern, I blame the yarn.

So I ran out of time to redo it(in case it came out wrong again) and decided to knit a simple head hugger (because I really love the pattern) in Kraemer Yarns Mauch Chunky in Kiwi.

If you want to knit the pumpkin hat (like I will be doing with a different yarn later) you can find it at:
Adult Pumpkin Hat

The only problem with the pattern is that the cast on numbers are totally off (unless you want your pumpkin hat to fit a pumpkin). Just multiply your gauge for a single inch by the circumference of your head in inches( i.e. 4 stitches per inch x 21 inch head circumference). Then round it down to fit in the nearest zero number (80,90, etc) because the pattern goes in multiples of 10.

Come find me on Ravelry

So I got my invite earlier this week and have since been forming my profile and adding projects, my stash, books, groups, etc. It's so exiciting!!! I'm not sure I will ever knit a pattern again without consulting ravelry. It's awesome to see what people have done with the same pattern, the yarns they've used, problems they've experienced, etc. And for all the yarn I bought and haven't used I can look up what projects people have done with them and how it worked out. It will really help take some of the guess work out of things!!! Come send me a message or friends request! My user name is Bohoknitterchic, real name Brittany Wilson, and location is Chico, CA- so you should have no problem finding me!

T-Strap Baby Booties

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

This was a super simple and quick pattern (especially if you knit the premie size because there are very few rows). Here’s the link to the lion brand free pattern for T-strap booties

I used the same yarn as the pink hat from yesterday- Sirdar’s Denim Chunky in a shade of pink. All I have left to do is sew on the buttons that I will pick up tomorrow. The blue and red inside are just small balls of yarn (baby feet you know, since I don't have any real one's handy).

Baby Beanies

I sure was busy yesterday!

I finished one baby beanie and made another one and then at the last second, when I was feeling particularly ambitious I made cute little pom poms to go on top. I'm really contemplating telling the future mommies that will get these hats that they can only keep them if they send me a pic of the baby wearing them, because that is cuteness that they need to share!!!

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

Anyways, these are super easy. I knit them straight and sewed up the side because I really didn't want to knit the entire things on dpns. They hats should be about 14 inches around so I cast on how ever many the gauge told me to (in multiples of 8 to make decreasing easier) and away I went!! I think I cast on 48 stitches for both. Then I knit about 4 inches before decreasing. Decreasing went as follows (k6, k2tog) around, purl around, (k5, k2tog) around, purl around- and so on ending with k2tog around. Then I tied the top and sewed up the side.

Poms are really easy. You can get a pom maker or cut a special piece of cardboard but for these i just wrapped the yarn around my pointer and middle finger as many times as I thought was neccessary (maybe 60-80 depending on yarn weight). Then I had my husband tie a piece of yarn tightly around the middle, cut all the loops and shaped the ball with some hair cutting scissors. Maybe I will post a blog about how to make a pom later- maybe not- we'll see how ambitious I am that day!!

For one of these two cuties I used Mondial Astro self striping yarn (alpaca, merino, acrylic, cotton, polymide blend) which is so cute and has a hint of sparkle. It's also really great at covering any mistakes. I bet you can't even tell that I did k2,p2 ribbbing on the first inch to keep it from curling.

For the other I used the same yarn as the heart scarf in a previous post Sirdar Denim Chunky yarn in pink (an acrylic, cotton, wool blend) that is super soft and took me no time at all to knit up.

Next on the agenda- baby booties to match. Hopely I'll get those done in the next week because I have about 10 projects in line after them!

Look at how much fun I had today!

Today I went and spent about 2 hours (and $125) at one of the local yarn stores here in Chico, CA called Heartstrings. I love it!!! I needed to get a bunch of yarn for upcoming presents and get a few things for myself since last week was my birthday. And then when I got home a birthday present was waiting on the doorstep for me (The Charmed Kits and Loom Knitting books)!!!! Did I have the best day or what? I just had to brag a little about it ...

I Love my Husband-Let me count the ways

My birthday was yesterday. I didn't want to do anything big and elaborate or "special", I just wanted a mellow day with my husband. I got everything that I wanted- and more!!! For my birthday my husband got me the Denise Knitting Needle interchangable pink (to support breast cancer) set. I was so excited!!! Here's the link to the kit: Denise Pink Kit

And here's the pic posted on their site:
Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

He also got me some really great bamboo and bamboo/wool yarn that I can't wait to knit up on my new pretty in pink needles!!!

I started to knit a hat with a pair today and I can't believe how comfortable they are to use, I like them better than any of the other circular needles I have. The circular part is less plasticy and more rubbery so they move better. They are really light weight and I swear I'm knitting faster than before.

I love them and my husband (I just hope he can tell which one I love more!)!
